Community United of North Arcata
Comunidad Unida del Norte de Arcata
Programs
CUNA, Comunidad Unida del Norte de Arcata/Community United of North Arcata, offers a range of community-driven programs aimed at improving and building a better represented Valley West/North Arcata. Key initiatives include the Resilience HUB/Family Resource Center, designed to enhance local resilience and resource access, community cleanups to maintain a cleaner neighborhood, and the Participatory Budget Process, allowing residents to engage in decision-making for community projects. CUNA’s programs are centered on fostering engagement, improving representation, and building stronger connections within the community.
Resilience HUB
The Resilience HUB for Valley West/North Arcata is a community space designed to support local residents before, during, and after they experience a disaster by providing essential services and resources. In the event of a disaster the HUB will include such things as backup power during outages, coordinate communication, food and water distribution and other emergency support immediately after a catastrophic event. A Resilience HUB is a place to build community resilience so that individuals,
families and neighborhoods can recover from economic downturns, human-caused disasters, natural disasters and other emergencies.

It focuses on strengthening community bonds, improving preparedness for emergencies, and fostering sustainability through workshops, events, and resource distribution. The HUB aims to create a more connected and resilient neighborhood, offering a space for collaboration and growth.
Family Resource Center
During non-disaster times our Resilience Hub will function as a Family
Resource Center and will provide, among other things, emergency food, a community garden, English as a Second Language classes, help with filling out
paperwork or referrals, finding services or playgroups and more.
The Family Resource Center at CUNA provides essential support to families in the North Arcata area, offering a variety of services, including assistance with basic needs, access to educational resources, and community-building activities. The center aims to create a nurturing environment where families can connect, grow, and access the tools they need to thrive, contributing to the overall resilience and well-being of the community.
Participatory Budget
The Participatory Budget at CUNA empowers North Arcata residents by giving them a direct role in deciding how a portion of the community budget is spent. This process allows community members to propose, discuss, and vote on projects that address local needs, ensuring that funds are allocated to initiatives that reflect the priorities of the people. It's a hands-on way for residents to shape the future of their neighborhood.
